The pigs
Around thirty pigs live here, from little ones to some truly enormous seniors. They nap hard, root through everything, and can hear a feed bucket from across the property.
Cedarville, New Jersey · Since 2014
A 43-acre rescue farm in South Jersey. Around 300 animals who were neglected, abused or abandoned now spend their days grazing, napping and being spoiled with apple slices.
The residents
Here's who you'll meet on a Saturday, from the pigs who nap all afternoon to the roosters who finally got a second chance.
Around thirty pigs live here, from little ones to some truly enormous seniors. They nap hard, root through everything, and can hear a feed bucket from across the property.
Dairy retireesSeveral of our cows came from dairy and other farms that could no longer keep them. Now their only job is grazing, and they take it very seriously.
Many of our roosters were rescued from cockfighting. Here they finally get to just be roosters: loud, proud and a little ridiculous.
Our retired horses have earned their rest. Some arrived injured, some simply aged out of work, and all of them now spend their days grazing in the sun.
Our senior donkey is 30 years old and still keeps an eye on everyone. Donkeys are loyal, opinionated, and excellent at asking for apple slices.
The goats test every gate, every latch and every pocket. Visitors are fair game for a friendly nibble, so hold on to your sleeves.
They watch the world from the fence line and hum to each other when something new shows up. Usually, that something is you.
Tall, curious and fearless around a pail of apple slices. Feed them through the fence with a flat hand, and let them come to you.
Turkeys who will never see a holiday table, peacocks who show off whenever they like, plus chickens, ducks, geese and pigeons.
Want to meet them in person? The farm is open every Saturday.
Book a visitOur story
In 2014, Jamie and Tara Castano began fostering dogs in South Jersey. They soon realized they had a lot more love to give.
That love grew into Freedom Farm: 43 acres in Cedarville, Cumberland County, and a home for around 300 animals. We work with state and local police and the local prosecutor's office to take in animals from cruelty and neglect cases, including roosters rescued from cockfighting. Others come to us retired or injured from dairy and other farms.
Every resident gets daily care, a safe place to rest, and all the time they need to trust people again.
Our sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing neglected, abused, abandoned or otherwise homeless animals.Jamie & Tara, founders
Closed Sunday through Friday. Weather closures go up on our Facebook page first.
Feed the animals along the fence line as you walk. They know exactly what that pail means.
Let the animals come to you, and keep hands on your side of the fence. Emus take slices best from a flat palm.
Wear closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting muddy, and bring water on warm days.
Parking is directly across from the farm on Newport Road.
Fundraisers like our Fall Festival are announced on Facebook. Follow along so you don't miss the next one.
